….Apparently whores back then were kind of logy. From all the tuberculosis.”
Frisky Dingo initially began, as I noted here, as a documentary about supervillain Killface’s attempts to destroy humanity. But things took a turn at season’s end: the super-annihilator machine’s couplers melted, and instead of driving the earth into the sun, the earth was simply moved about three feet further from the sun. (Oops — SPOILER.) Stunned by this event but not so stunned as to lose his tremendous, talon-footed agility, Killface ran for president. Season two–Behold a Dark Horse–is a documentary about his campaign, his opponent Xander Crews, and the various political functionaries attendant. And little baby penguin Lamont. It is the finest political documentary ever filmed.
OK, I finally watched season one of Frisky Dingo, and it is pretty good. I prefer the Venture Brothers for lots of reasons: JG Thirwell’s music, the voices of Doc Hammer, Patrick Warburton and James Ubaniak, the Jonny Quest references…
But this is up there with Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman (Is Colbert still doing that?)
I don’t really know what Adult Swim is up to now though. Reruns of the PJ’s, King of the Hill and Family Guy??? Could the Williams Street golden age have come and gone already? It was pretty brilliant while it lasted. 12 oz mouse., Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost C2C of course, Moral Orel and the Ventures…
They do have something on called Superjail which I don’t know about. Has anyone caught that? Or does no one waste time with this crap except me and Mike? What am I saying? You people spend money on Paul Blart, Mall Cop. YOu might as well be huffing bags of model glue.
Mmmmmm, model glue.
I don’t watch the shows on the air–I wait for dvd. I share your assessment of the superiority of Venture–but, then again, I think Venture is one of the most brilliant television shows around. I have never seen Sealab, but just got the first season….
Mark, have you seen Tim and Eric? It’s spotty, but when they hit, they’re ridiculously great. E.g., the clip embedded in this interview with Dr. Steve Brule…
I’ve seen some Tim & Eric, and yeah, when it’s good, it’s really funny. But i love subversive animation, and that’s what adult swim did so well for so long.
If you haven’t seen Morel Orel, give it a try (it’s spoofing Davey & Goliath, an easy target, but it’s not nearly as over the top as something like Robot CHicken, and is funnier for it). You’ll dig Sealab. I seem to remember it getting a little boring for a while, and then kicking into a whole new dimension of senselessness near the end. And Erik Estrada!
