Millions

Whimsical, delightfully sentimental (I looked it up and it’s not such a bad word), visually stylish, and sophisticated about childhood, consumerism and global economics; Millions was pleasurable without feeling “important.” It’s the kind of film you always felt Spielberg was capable of if he just didn’t feel the need to try so damn hard.

  1. Danny Boyle is notoriously hit-or-miss – to be kind – and unless there are zombies, I no longer treat his name on the poster as a good thing.

I remember one review of Millions saying that it did look like Boyle was trying too hard; that the film was too stylized for the subject matter and for its own good (which certainly applies to Senor Spielbergo). That and the presence of saints is making this fall into my “maybe rent.”
